Retrospective Workshops

Every teams knows the importance of learning from their mistakes (and learning from their successes!), but too often we jump from one project to the next without taking a moment to reflect openly on what went well, what didn't go well and what we should change.

A Retrospective is a 90-120 minutes gathering, usually (but not always) virtual, where our expert facilitators create the space for open discussion between your team on a recently completed project (or project phase).

Having an independent voice as a facilitator ensures that everyone is heard, that focus stays on the problems not the people involved and that the lead gets to take a full part instead of focusing on leading the discussion.

Retrospectives can be a stand alone event, or part of a longer workshop (e.g. Strategy or Team Focus)

After a Retrospective, the facilitator will prepare a report of what was discussed and agreed.

Restrospectives: The Why and How

Bringing a team together for a session dedicated to discuss how the project went ensures that everyone's voice is heard and lessons are shared through the whole team. During a Retrospectives project leads often learn a lot more than they expected to learn about what obstacles were faced by team members.

As soon as possible after your project, or phase of a project, ends. We highly recommend you plan your Retrospective as soon as you see the project end approaching. The bigger the gap between project end and Retrospective, the less people will remember and the less impact the lessons learnt will have.

Not only do our facilitators bring a wealth of experience into leading a Retrospective, but they also increase the impact of the event by being independent voices. Teams are often more open about the obstacles they face when the project lead is an equal participant in the discussion, not leading it.

Each Retrospective is different, depending on the project, the experience in the team and the level of trust between members. Most, but certainly not all, Retrospectives will follow the structure of: What went well, What could have gone better, What should we change.

Types of workshops

A team workshop or offsite brings your team, leadership, project group or key stakeholders together to solve a problem or achieve objectives (whatever they may be). The most common goals include:

Strategy + Planning

Collaboratively build an effective, actionable strategy or plan for your team, organisation or project. Our toolkit of activities encourages the sharing of ideas, hopes and concerns whilst ensuring decisions are made and plans agreed.

Team Effectiveness

Get your team aligned, build the trust battery, resolve conflict and find effective ways of working together. We'll use and adapt some of our range of tried and trusted team activities to build a bespoke workshop for your team's exact needs.

Innovate

When there's a complex problem to be tackled, product to be developed or process to be refined, innovation workshops can help you identify problems, share and develop creative ideas and design a prototype, putting you on the path to progress.

Reflect

Taking the time to discuss and consider a project's mistakes (and successes!) is a key part of improving yourself and your team. A project retrospective gives everyone a voice as you explore what went well, what could have gone better and what needs to change.
